Walton Family Walk - April 10th

Posted 10/4/2016

This weekend saw the majority of our regular walkers unable to attend for other commitments. Nevertheless, a twenty strong party assembled at The Heronry for a lovely stroll in the spring sunshine.

Kasia decided to do a lap of the lake with her new baby in her pushchair whilst her older son, Jack and his grandma walked with the rest of us.

Our party of twenty set off towards the bird hides, taking a path left to Walton across some fields and a footbridge crossing a beck. Here, things took a turn for the squelchy, with the path crossing a very boggy field before doubling back to skirt the golf course and enter the sludgefest of Stubbs Wood.

We successfully navigated the difficult terrain, despite difficulties with a pushchair (and Amanda's obligatory faceplant) before emerging at Walton Hall. Passing behind the beautifully situated hall and hotel we descended to the canal towpath and followed the Barnsley canal, before crossing a stone bridge and taking a raised path, tracking the boundary wall of the estate into Haw Park Wood.

After one last ascent, met by some grumbling from the younger ones, we dropped down road and back to the car park for well earned refreshments at the park cafe.

Although heavy rain in the run up to this walk had left many of the paths in poor condition, the bright sunshine on the day made for a picturesque walk which everyone seemed to enjoy. We also welcomed three DVWG debutantes today in Rose Winspear, Julie Foster and Trisha MacDuff's grandson, Luca. Thanks to all who attended and we hope to see you all again soon.
