Tetney to Cleethorpes Walk - August 22nd

Posted 23/8/2015

A great day at the seaside for DVWG in stunning August sunshine.

As we were travelling to Cleethorpes, it was an earlier than usual meet for our party, in order to catch the 08:18 train from Meadowhall, heading for Cleethorpes. It was a pleasant journey and a genuine joy to see scores of young families boarding the train along the way for a day at the seaside.

The next stage of our journey was to leave the train at Grimsby and then catch a bus to Tetney in order to start our walk, after Diane's obligatory tea and cake stop, we boarded a double decker bus for the 30 minute journey to Tetney. This was amusing because both David Kirk and Gary Marshall felt disorientated as they had not travelled by bus in many years and Diane Marshall and Julie Gray reverted to childhood and insisted on sitting on the front seat upstairs.

We set off from Tetney, walking through the picturesque village to pick up green lanes and the Louth Canal path towards the village of Tetney Lock, where we stopped for refreshment at the Crown & Anchor.

We continued to follow the Louth Canal until it reached the coast and after a short lunch break, we headed for Humberston, the beach at the north end of the village is the best in the area with long stretches of golden sands. We passed a busy Humber Mouth Yacht Club clubhouse and the passing point for the Greenwich Meridian before hitting the seafront in Cleethorpes for our final leg of the 8.30 miles walk.

As we had completed the walk by 3pm and were not  due to leave while 6.30pm, there was ample opportunity for us to cool off from our sweltering walk with a few drinks in the various hostelries such as Willies Brewery, Waves Bar and the Swashbuckle Tavern. Our refreshments were helped down by some lovely fish and chips for just £2.90.

There were more people on Cleethorpes seafront than I have seen in many years, which was great to see. All in all this was a fantastic, enjoyable day out for DVWG, if a trifle long 12 hour round trip. It was pleasing to find that we had missed a monsoon style storm at home too !!
