Cantley Park Family Walk - 21st May

Posted 21/5/2017

Steve Pennock just gets the five points he wanted for today, with the official mileage of our elongated route coming in at 4.6! This makes him our first ever participant to clock up 300 miles in a season! Well done, Steve!

A depleted party of seven adults and two children enjoyed a lovely walk in clement weather round Cantley Park and its surrounding woodland. We got off to an inauspicious start, discovering that the route description from Doncaster Council's website did not match the map they supplied, and neither matched the terrain we were walking! Resultantly we found ourselves heading eastwards out of the park towards Nether Cantley village instead of northwards to Sandall Beat Woods.

Nevertheless, a picturesque circuit of Crowther Wood got us back on track and we crossed a railway line via a pleasant wooden bridge to find the well kept play area of Sandall Beat Park. Passing this, despite protestations from the kids, we continued onwards in a small circle round the Sandall Beat Woods, whose varied plant and insect life make it a site of special scientific interest. Returning to the playground we then stopped for lunch and ice cream before making our way back across the railway footbridge, finally skirting Cantley Park Pitch and Putt to get back to the car park.
